How It's Used
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Andrographis clears Heat and resolves Fire toxicity (benefitting the throat), dries dampness, resolves phlegm, and cools the blood.
In Western terms, Andrographis is known to exhibit antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and immunostimulating properties. It has been mostly studied for colds, flu, and upper respiratory infections. Studies suggest Andrographis alone or in combination with other herbs may reduce duration and severity of upper respiratory infections associated with the common cold or flu by preventing these viruses from binding to cells in the body. Other data suggests it may help some inflammatory conditions such as ulcerative colitis or rheumatoid arthritis.
Fun fact: There are many bitter tasting herbs used in TCM, but Andrographis is known as the “King of Bitters.”
