Silktree Bark / He Huan Pi
Traditionally supports: Emotional well-being, Balanced mood, Gentle stress support, and Restful sleep
How It's Used
Known as the "happiness bark", Silktree Bark is the classic Chinese Medicine grief herb. Its name, He Huan, means "collective happiness," and it's traditionally used to settle the spirit, ease emotional tension, and lift the mood without sedating; helping feelings that have felt stuck begin to move again.
In Western herbal traditions, Silktree Bark is valued for calm that doesn't cloud you. It's rich in naturally occurring compounds like julibroside saponins and flavonoids, which researchers have studied for their soothing, mood-supporting, and sleep-supporting qualities.
Fun fact: The silktree's feathery leaves gently fold closed at night, as if settling in to rest, partly how it earned its reputation as a calming, sleep-friendly plant. In China, it was traditionally planted near the home to soften tension and invite a little more harmony under one roof.
"He Huan Pi is the herb I reach for when someone is carrying grief or tension they haven't been able to set down. It helps emotions move again, gently."
